In the year after Japan’s first national park was established at Unzen, Unzen Kanko Hotel opened on 10th October 1935. As the first hotel in Japan to openly commit itself to tourism and to use the word of "kanko" (means tourism) in its name to promote the idea that country's "glory" is its culture, Unzen Kanko Hotel gained a lot of attention as a prominent resort hotel and as well as is regarded the standard bearer of Japan's tourist industry.
