At one time, Unzen was written with the Chinese characters for Onsen(hot spring) but read as Unzen. The hotel is western in style but features hot spring baths. The waters of Unzen Jigoku(Unzen Hell) that supply the hot springs are easily affected by the seasons and the weather; they require careful temperature control and exacting daily maintenance.
